WHO WE ARE
Harvard Humanist Alumni (“HHA”) is a Shared Interest Group within the Harvard Alumni Association, formed in the spring of 2008. HHA is primarily for alumni of all Harvard schools, but also includes current and former faculty, staff, and students, as well as close relatives of alumni. Those without Harvard affiliations are welcome to participate in most of our programs as well.
Our purpose is to create a community for Humanists and other non-theists, addressing our needs through various life stages. Thus far HHA has developed a Humanist Discussion Group and a Humanist Family Group, which are described below. We also held our reunion events in June 2009 and May 2010.
Although most of our activities are Boston-based we have active chapters in New York City and San Francisco. Chapters are forming in Chicago, Los Angeles and the District of Columbia, and we plan to expand into additional cities.
To learn more about the Harvard Humanist Alumni, please take a look at our foundational documents. Finally, please sign up at our online membership site, https://memdir.org/HHA/membership.cfm, which not only enables us to contact you, but also allows you to join a Group or Chapter, tell us about your interests, and to find other Humanist and like-minded Harvard alumni.
PROGRAM DETAILS
1) HUMANIST DISCUSSION GROUP. The HDG is a discussion group for Humanists and like-minded individuals, meeting twice monthly since March 2008. Topics range from the abstract – religion, philosophy, ethics, epistemology, history, ancient culture, politics, the relationship between science and culture, geopolitics, to the personal–marriage, romantic relationships, parenting, friendship, social associations, compassion, and communication.
Currently, the HDG meets on Sundays alongside the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard’s Sunday Meetings. We are, however, taking a summer break and will not be meeting as often. Sign up for our emails above for more information about coming meetings.
HDG emphasizes democratic governance, encouraging attendees to suggest topics and serve as moderators. Its aims include intellectual and ethical growth, deepening our understanding of, and commitment to Humanism, developing our presentation and leadership skills, and initiating other Humanist programs.
If interested in attending the HDG or organizing another HDG in another city, please join the HDG on Facebook or our online membership site.
2) HUMANIST FAMILY GROUP. The HFG is a social group for Humanist families and anyone interested in Humanist family life. Please join the Humanist Family Group on Facebook or on our online membership site, https://memdir.org/HHA/membership.cfm.
3) INTERNET VENUES. We have created a Harvard Humanist Alumni group on Facebook. Have a look and join! Please also visit our community blog for topics of interest to us.
