The Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard:Advancing Humanist Community and Education
The Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard (HCH) is dedicated to building, educating, and nurturing a diverse community of Humanists, atheists, agnostics, and the nonreligious at Harvard and beyond. HCH serves undergraduate and graduate student communities; in addition, Harvard faculty, staff, alumni, and the general public are welcome and encouraged to participate and join in our activities.
We have built, on the foundation of a more than 35 year-old chaplaincy, a dynamic institution engaged in:
-
Spearheading Humanist educational initiatives for incubating Humanist leadership and furthering knowledge about Humanism;
-
Cultivating a community of people who support each other through life, empowering one another to live lives guided by reason and motivated by compassion;
-
Advancing dialogue on ethics and human values; and between Humanism and religion;
-
Practicing secular meditation and contemplative techniques
-
Marking life’s transitions with meaningful secular wedding, funeral, and baby naming/welcoming ceremonies;
-
Advancing human rights and the dignity of every person, by engaging in community service alongside fellow Humanists and secularists;
-
Celebrating science and critical inquiry as humanity’s best tools for learning about the world;
-
Facilitating a network within the Harvard network; a home away from home at Harvard for Humanist and nontheist affiliates and alumni.
In recent years, thousands of members of the greater Harvard community have participated in HCH's programs. In the single month of April 2009, we hosted 16 events drawing over 1500 attendees; April 2010 saw similarly high levels of activity. But there is still so much work to be done to build a truly great community for the thousands of nonreligious people on our campus and in the area. And we can't do it without you!
